Chocolate Chip Kugelhopf

Kugelhopf, this week’s Tuesdays with Dorie group recipe, takes time. Not just a few hours. Many, many, many hours of beating, mixing, rising, deflating, slapping, chilling, resting, covering, baking uncovered, baking covered, unmolding and soaking the cake in butter and sugar. You won’t find more action on Hollywood Boulevard, but it all takes time. Kugelhopf would give Rachael Ray an aneurysm.

The result is part bread, part cake. Delicious straight out of the oven or toasted the next day. Perfect with coffee. Even better when you draw a line through Dorie’s raisins and substitute twice as many chocolate chips.

And just wait until you see what I’m going to do with this thing tomorrow.

You’ll find Dorie’s recipe for kugelhopf with Yolanda of The All-purpose Girl.

Minus raisins, plus chocolate? You’re totally my kind of food blogger <3

  • lauren November 11th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

is it bread pudding? that’s a good idea. even if it’s not, maybe I’ll make that. chocolate chips are a good idea for this loooooong recipe.

“Kugelhopf would give Rachael Ray an aneurysm.” Lol! I love it. Chocolate chips sound good, though I like raisins just fine. =)

Great looking kugelhopf! I like the idea of using chocolate chips!

  • Mari November 11th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Yummmmm….I want to go the chocolate route next time! There’s definitely some effort involved, but it’s oh so worth it!

I can’t wait to see what you do, I’m sure I’ll follow suit! My sunflower pan is a metallica and the greatest pan I ever splurged on.

    Rachel Ray~~aneurysm….bwahahahahah!

    It looks great.

  • Karen November 11th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Might be too much work for me…

  • Marthe November 11th, 2008 at 4:37 pm

I also loved this with chocolate in it, but I prefered it with raisins/cranberries!

  • food librarian November 11th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

LOL! Yes, this would kill Racheal! Great looking, time well spent!

  • Kimberly November 11th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

    Looks terrific!

  • Christine November 11th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Awesome job with the chocolate and minus the raisins! All these raisin recipes are killing me. Rachel Ray would have a heartache with the amount of time this bread took!

I’m also laughing at that RR quote – so true! Your kugelhopf looks great! I think I liked mine better this morning toasted with some jam. Pretty tasty, but not worth all that time IMHO.

  • rainbowbrown November 11th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

It is worth it indeed. Very nice looking ring.

  • Tammy November 11th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

looks good. I used chocolate chips as well, but even they didnt jazz it up enough for me, so I am looking forward to seeing what you do with it tomorrow!

  • CB November 11th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

LOL @ RR reference. You’ve peaked my interest for tomorrow. Way to stretch your TWD post into 2 days! HAHA. PS. Congrats on being NaBloPoMo blog of the week!

You are going to do something great with your Kugelhopf tomorrow, and here I have already eaten all of mine. Will it be great enough to invest another twenty hours to make more Kugelhopf? We shall see…But with a Kuglehopf that looks so good, how do you even have any left for tomorrow?

  • Cathy November 11th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

There sure was a lot of action going on here! But yes, it did take time — and somehow, even though there should have been large stretches of waiting around time involved, I managed to time things so that I was unable to get anything else done besides wait for the kugelhopf to rise/be ready to get slapped, etc. I am so eager to see what you do with this tomorrow!

  • Bakerslove November 11th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Chocolate Chips are a MUCH better choice than rasins! Good call! I think that I shall now steal from you! *)

  • Amy November 11th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Your Kugelhopf looks so good! I should have used chocolate chips!

  • pinkstripes November 12th, 2008 at 12:37 am

Your kugelhopf looks great. I can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  • Kayte November 12th, 2008 at 8:08 am

I figured there was a way you would incorporate chocolate in there somehow…just wasn’t sure exactly how you would do it…LOL. It looks very pretty with all that powdered sugar dusting the top. Rachel Ray/Hollywood Blvd/line through the raisins…you are always a good chuckle to start or end the day. Thanks for your fun take on life…it’s always good to leave with a smile, dontchathink?

I’m a recent convert to your blog, which is delightful and delish… so much so you deserve an award, (if you haven’t already received it before.)

  • Jude November 12th, 2008 at 10:10 am

Very nice… I love making rich yeast breads (or is it cake) like this.
Looks like you’re doing nablopomo. Must be extra hard on food/recipes bloggers.

  • Kim November 12th, 2008 at 11:44 am

Great job! I love your plate..pretty!

  • steph (whisk/spoon) November 12th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

    mmmm—chocolate and cake/bread sounds delicious!!

  • Cristine November 12th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

    Chocolate chip kugelhopf??? DELICIOUS!!!

  • Amanda November 13th, 2008 at 4:05 am

The Rachel Ray comment was hilarious! and yours looks gorgeous. Love the ring mold. And chocolate chips — lots of them — would be nice. Raisens are bit boring!

  • AmyRuth November 16th, 2008 at 12:44 am

Toll House Kugelettes……who doesn’t love Americana chocolate? I think we all giggle imagining Poor Rachel bouncing around her 30 minute meal set slapping down a Kugelette. he he Thanks for that picture. Yummo warm bread with choco chips. Sounds delish.
    AmyRuth

PS What did you do with the remainder?

  • Jaime November 17th, 2008 at 1:24 am
