“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”–Edith Wharton
“You just gotta ignite the light / and let it shine / Just own the night / like the 4th of July.”–Katy Perry
Today’s the Winter Solstice, so tonight will be the longest night of the year – especially if you get suckered into watching the four-hour Sound of Music Sing-a-Long, amirite?
The summer before I started high school, I was cast as one of the singing nuns in a kids’ production of The Sound of Music, because that’s what every 14-year-old girl dreams of, and the night of my big performance, I lost my shoes. It was dark backstage, and I just couldn’t find them. So right before showtime, the director slips off her black heels and hands them to me to wear onstage. There are two problems with this scenario: 1.) I’ve never worn heels and 2.) my feet are at least three sizes smaller than hers. The second I climb onto them, I know that if I take a normal step, I’ll be kissing the stage. So my cue comes, and I start shuffling towards the other nuns using the teeniest, tiniest geisha steps I can take and still be moving forward.
I’m so afraid of falling, I can’t breathe. My voice sounds like a farting tea kettle.
“A WILL o the WISP!”
It was so bad.
By the end of my big scene, the other nuns were praying with their rosaries, while I stood before the Lord and hundreds of my fellow Clarksvillians with my hands clasped around a size 11 pair of stilettos.
Then the show was over, the lights came on, and there were my shoes. Right where I’d left them.
Since ancient times, the Solstice has been about braving the dark and believing that the light will come. So tonight, I’m challenging you to shine on. Light some candles. Sit in the dark and watch your Christmas tree twinkle. Flip on the porchlight, especially for all the delivery people working tonight. Enjoy the magical glow of Lil BUB’s yule log video (above). Decide on something you’re going to brave next year. Or pray for anyone who’s been facing dark times to find some light.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
