We’re doing 25 days of Christmas challenges to keep that holly-jolly mojo flowing. Click here for the full Countdown to Christmas Advent calendar.
I’m all for introducing fun new things at Christmas, but the truth is that there’s a lot of comfort in the things that stay the same – the people, the music, the sizzle of country ham on the stove and the way I know my dad will motion to me to get the trash bags the second the last gift is unwrapped. And there’s the fun of sharing Christmas memories with a lot of the people who helped make them in the first place.
So today, I’m challenging you to show some love to the Ghost of Christmas Past:
★ Look over some of your old Christmas photos. ★ Call your brother or sister and remind them of the time they got so excited about Santa that they jumped in bed and puked all over you. ★ Free an old toy from storage to put under your tree. ★ Ask someone about their favorite Christmas memories. ★ Listen to Neil Gaiman read A Christmas Carol. ★ Read Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory. (It’s short.) ★ Watch a vintage Christmas special. (There are so many on YouTube.) ★ Ask your parents (or grandparents) what Christmas was like when they were kids.★ Have a “memory bear” made from a loved one’s clothing. One that you can set out at Christmas every year. ★ Get serious about gathering your family’s heirloom holiday recipes. ★ Ask your mom to teach you how to make that one cake or candy that makes the holidays. ★ Grab a safety pin, and hang one of your child’s booties or baby socks on the tree. ★ Reach out to friends you’ve been missing. ★ Donate a toy, out of gratitude for all the happy Christmases you’ve had.
You’ve been so loved.
